Stephen C. Biggs, CFA, CFP®
Steve is the Chief Investment Officer and a Principal at HC Financial Advisors. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) whose background includes experience in fundamental equity research, stock selection, and portfolio management. For five years, Steve was the Senior Equity Analyst for Technology at Zacks Investment Research, an independent research organization that provides information to brokerage houses and institutional investors on stocks in all sectors of the market. Steve also worked at Wells Capital Management, the institutional investment management division of Wells Fargo Bank, where he co-managed the Wells Fargo Growth Fund.
As a CFA, Steve also holds a B.A. degree in Business Administration and an M.S. degree in Finance from San Diego State University. Steve is an avid cyclist who participates in major endurance races around the country each year.
Andrew C. Byron, CFP®, MBA
Andy is a Senior Financial Advisor and Principal who focuses on providing financial planning and investment management services to our clients. Andy joined HC Financial Advisors after a successful career as a high-tech president and business owner, sales/operations director, and private investor. He earned an MBA degree from Santa Clara University, graduating magna cum laude, with a concentration in Finance. He has completed the CFP educational requirements and has passed the Certified Financial Planner® exam. He is also a member of the Financial Planning Association.
In addition, he holds a B.A. degree from St. Olaf College with double majors in English and Theology. Andy and his wife live in Pleasanton where they have raised their five children, all now young adults, and participated in school and sports activities. He is also an active member of the Care Ministry at his church.
Karla J. McAvoy, CFP®, MBA
As a Senior Financial Advisor and Principal, Karla focuses on providing financial planning services and retirement forecasts. Karla received her B.A. in Economics from the University of California at Davis and graduated with honors. She also received an MBA degree from Santa Clara University in 2001. She worked in the technology industry for about fifteen years, most recently for PeopleSoft, prior to becoming a financial planner. Karla works with families, young professionals, widows, and couples nearing and in retirement. Karla is also in charge of technology for the firm and is the Chief Compliance Offer.
Karla is an active member of both NAPFA (National Association of Personal Financial Advisors) and the FPA (Financial Planning Association) and is the 2014 Chair of the annual FPA Norcal Conference. She is also active in her community, volunteering time at her children’s schools, on the neighborhood Homeowner’s Association, and as a coach and volunteer for a variety of local sports leagues.
Katie Horton, CFP®, CPA
As a Financial Planner, Katie helps individuals create financial plans customized to their needs and helps them successfully navigate their financial lives. She graduated with a B.S. degree in Accounting from Brigham Young University and worked three years as a senior tax associate at Ernst and Young, LLP. In addition to holding a CPA license, Katie earned an M.S. degree in Personal Financial Planning from Texas Tech University in 2011 and is a Certified Financial Planner®.
Katie works with Karla McAvoy and Andy Byron to assist clients with their financial planning needs. She is a member of NAPFA (National Association of Personal Financial Advisors) and the FPA (Financial Planning Association). Katie enjoys spending her time serving in her church and exploring the beauty of the outdoors.
DeAnne Cardona, CMFC®
DeAnne is our Operations Manager and assists clients with all interactions with Charles Schwab, our trading platform. She opens new accounts, processes client requests and distributions, and completes all transactional forms. DeAnne also assists the partners and advisors in preparing reports for analysis and review. She has also completed the coursework and passed the exam to become a Chartered Mutual Fund Counselor℠.
DeAnne has worked in the investment advisory business for many years and continues to provide excellent service and support to both our clients and advisors. DeAnne was recently appointed as a Notary Public for the State of California. She enjoys gardening and spending time with her husband and two children.
Kim is our Administrative Assistant. In this role, she assists in coordinating the schedules of our team and works with clients to set up meetings and Annual Reviews. She also acts as a general office manager helping ensure that the office runs smoothly. Kim works closely with our team to help assist our clients when they are in the office or have a request.
Kim comes to us with years of experience in accounting and financial services. She has a B.A. in Law & Society from the University of California at Santa Barbara. She enjoys hiking with her Weimaraner, Gracie, in local East Bay Hills.
Gabriel is our Client Service Representative. In this role, Gabriel assists our advisors in preparing for our annual client review meetings and works with clients to ensure that all important information is up to date for those meetings. He also works closely with clients who have retirement accounts, making sure that their required minimum distributions are completed each year.
Gabriel joins HC Financial Advisors after working with several other advisors. He is currently studying to become a Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor® through the College of Financial Planning. Gabriel also has an M.A. in Organizational Leadership, and a B.A. in Pastoral Studies. In his spare time, he enjoys working out and cooking.
Peggy S. Cabaniss, CFP®, Co-Founder, and Board Member
Peggy is the co-founder of HC Financial Advisors. She worked for over 30 years as an investment advisor and financial planner. A CFP® since 1986, she has been a long-term member of NAPFA (National Association of Personal Financial Advisors) and FPA (Financial Planning Association). Peggy was elected to NAPFA’s National Board in 2003 and served as Chair for the 2005/2006 year. She holds a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Arizona and an M.S. degree in Information Science from the University of California at Los Angeles.
For six years, Peggy was named one of the top financial advisors in the country by Worth magazine. In both 2008 and 2009, she was listed in Wealth Manager magazine as one of 50 Women in Wealth Management who have contributed to the role of women in the profession. Peggy has been an active member of the community with her children and grandchildren. Peggy retired from HC Financial Advisors in December 2014, but continues to serve on the Board.
